Alba Iulia- a place of unrivaled beauty
We can say that an important moment not only in the town’s history but also in the country’s history is the year 1600 when Alba Iulia became the capital of the three countries: Romania, Transylvania and Moldavia united in one single country. Much later, more exactly in 1918, it was to become the town of the Great Unification.
Cetatea Alba Carolina (The White Fortress) in the medieval City of Alba Iulia on Citadelei Hill, is considered to be one of the seven wonders of Romania. Romanians are proud to have a beautiful Fortress as that. Being formed of a central fort and seven bastions with Baroque gates, the fortress is offering the Vauban star-shape, the fortress with its 12 kilometres walls covers almost 100 hectares. The fortress offers an authentic architecture that can be admired walking on foot or pedaling on the bicycles found inside, down at the entrance. Built in the form of a triumphal arch, the first gate of the fortress has three entrances. In order to discover its history you are welcomed to visit it. If you visit the White Fortress of Alba Iulia at certain times of the year, especially on December 1, you will be able to participate at the military ceremonies, flower arrangements for the heroes, the Folk Ensemble of Alba County, the parade of troops and military equipment and much more. The fortress itself is wonderful. You can spend a whole day in it, admiring the cathedrals and museums inside.
Rapa rosie ( Red ravine) is a protected area, a natural monument of national interest. Erosion and runoff has given it a prominent, sharp rocky appearance in the mountainside. Rapa Rosie itself measures approximately 10 hectares in size. The geological monument has been called a “natural wonder”. On every 1st of May you could come and do paragliding of parachuting here. They started to do such a gathering yearly. I highly recommend this for people who like not going to every other famous tourist attraction and who like a challenge as well. I strongly encourage you to take upon this adventure. But remember to take the hiking shoes with you.
Parcul aventura (The adventure park) is located on Mamut Hill, in the wooded area of Alba Iulia, The park is opened mostly in the warm season and awaits visitors – both children and adults – for an adventure session and outdoor exercise. The park has several obstacles, depending on age and capacity, from the age of 4 and up. The theme of the Dynamis adventure park is inspired by the other adventure parks. In addition to the regular program of the park, educational workshops for children in educational centers are held periodically here.
Pestera Scarisoara (Scarisoara Cave) is one of the biggest ice caves in the Apuseni Mountains of Romania, in a part of Carpathian chain. The most important natural tourist attraction in Alba and where the oldest underground ice block in the world is located, the Scarisoara Glacier will be reopened soon ready to impress everyone with its beauty. The cave has a length of over 700 meters and a level difference of 105 meters. The tourist route on the ice block is made on wooden bridges. The Scarisoara glacier is a fossil ice deposit formed over three and a half millennia ago.
