TARGU JIU- A CITY FULL OF ART AND HISTORY

The largest city of Gorj, Targu Jiu takes its name from the river that crosses it, being mentioned for the first time in 1406. The city gave Romania many personalities, including Constantin Brancusi, Gheorghe Magheru, Horatiu Malaele, Ecaterina Teodoroiu and Tudor Vladimirescu. Targu Jiu is a beautiful city, full of history and a lot of famous monuments. In Targu Jiu you can also visit the memorial houses of the personalities mentioned above, churches with a wonderful history behind them, and last but not least, the well-known monuments around the world.

Ansamblul monumental Calea Eroilor sculptat de Constantin Brancusi. The monumental ensemble Calea Eroilor, sculpted by Constantin Brancusi, formed by the Infinity Column, the Kissing Gate and the Table of Silence, represents, by far, the most important objective in Gorj County, visited annually by thousands of tourists. You can walk between these wonderful monuments, admiring the old architecture of the buildings. Apart from the sculptures of Brancusi, the church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is also part of Calea Eroilor, you can admire the Church passing by it.

Parcul Insulita. The island park. Not far from Brancusi’s Table of Silence and the place where in 1916 there were heavy battles, there appeared a small park located on a tiny island, with green spaces and alleys only good to cross them on foot, colorful artesian wells, an Aqua Park and a beautiful view where in the distance you can see the Parang mountains, and the shores that are mirrored in the Jiu water, creating a different picture every day.

Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului. The Church of the Assumption (1694) is painted by the painters of the Brancovenesti school from Horezu. It is located on Teodoroiu Ecaterina Boulevard no. 365. It is the oldest Church in Gorj County and it has an extraordinary architecture.

Casa Memoriala Ecaterina Teodoroiu. Ecaterina Teodoroiu Memorial House, built in 1884 and became a memorial house in 1938, is located on Ecaterina Teodoroiu Boulevard no. 270. In the building are exhibited: original interior furniture from the beginning of the twentieth century, personal items, photographs, books and belonging to Ecaterina Teodoroiu.

Casa pitarului Dimitrie Maldarescu. The house of the baker Dimitrie Maldarescu, the oldest building in the city (1710), currently houses the headquarters of the folk art school. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in Oltenia, an objective you should not miss if you are nearby.

Muzeul arhitecturii populare din Gorj- Curțișoara. The Museum of Popular Architecture from Gorj- Curțișoara. It is an open-air museum that includes monuments of architecture and popular technique from Gorj. Many representative buildings, wooden houses and peasant cellars, all being in the patrimony of the cultural museum in the country.

At any passage through Gorj County, it is worth taking a break in Targu Jiu, the city of the most famous Romanian works of art whose fame has made its way around the world.
